A very special Irish entrepreneur giving it socks and going global
Thomas Barry, owner of Thomp2 Socks is a very special entrepreneur with his own sock business supported by his dad Finbar Barry, his nephew Shane Barry and his family from Tallaght, Co Dublin. Thomas suffers with Downs Syndrome as well as a host of other serious illnesses such as Perthes Disease, Hirschsprung Disease, Heart Murmur, Under-active Thyroid, Hiatus Hernia, stomach Re-flux and he was the youngest person ever to have hip replacements in Ireland at just 28.
This didn’t affect his creative desire to express his inner self and with the help of his family, Thomp2 Socks has now moved to a new location in order to fulfil orders coming in from all over the world. _“Orders from America have increased dramatically over the last 12 months with repeat orders from Australia, Dubai, Canada, Norway, Finland, Germany and France to name but a few. We are also able to do bulk orders of branded socks for corporate clients with really clever artwork which make great promotional merchandise”_ said Shane Barry, Manager of Thomp2Socks “_We moved to bigger premises as we outgrew our previous location. We are hoping to start a manufacturing facility and to employ more people with Down Syndrome that may find it difficult to get a job”_
Despite his challenges, Thomas still has time to think of others. Thomas launched _“It’s Okay, not to be Okay_” socks last year and for every pair sold, he donates €2 to Pieta to directly support the battle against mental health issues. Thomas also designed socks himself to help raise awareness for Down Syndrome and raise funds for St John of Gods Services which he attends.
_“I looked at options over the years in the hope to provide some way for Thomas to feel like he can have a job just like everybody else (bearing in mind his disabilities) and the answer was staring me in the face_, said Finbar Barry, Thomas’s father “_Thomas has always played with socks, he is quite an expert after many years of practice. He never played much with toys in his early childhood but would go nowhere without his socks, some children get comfort from a teddy - with Thomas it was always the socks._ _So, we launched Thomp2Socks for Thomas selling socks - the things he loves most”_
The name of his company is called Thomp2, because when Thomas signs his name it looks like Thomp2 which is something he can identify with as he designed the logo himself. A full range of colourful and creative socks, gifts and special occasion socks are available from www.tomp2.com and also a clever ‘Sockscription’ service where customers receive a surprise pair of socks every month.
