Description
Preparations are well under way for the 2024 Clonakilty point to point races on Beamish's Farm, Inchydoney on Sunday, May 26.
Once again, the Irish National Hunt Steeplechase Committee has bestowed the honour on Clonakilty of sharing the final day of the season with the fixture at Ballingarry, Roscrea, Co Tipperary.
That means the results at Inchydoney will help to determine the annual awards for riders, handlers and horses decided over the course of 73 race-days since the season kicked off at Dromahane, Mallow, Co Cork, on December 30 last.
With annual national titles at stake, some of the top stars of the sport will be in Inchydoney. Leading riders Rob James (with 37 winners by mid-May) and Barry O'Neill (35) will be hunting last-day winners.
Look out also for Co Cork riders Darragh Allen and John Barry who have been at the top of the southern region rider's points table.
Wexford handler Colin Bowe, always a good supporter of the Clonakilty races, will hopefully try to improve on his impressive 14% win strike rate so far this season.
Watch out for Maxine O'Sullivan, Mallow, Co Cork, and Susie Doyle, Thurles, Tipperary, if they come to West Cork in the tight race between them for the winners to decide the lady riders title.
Check your racecard also for Corkmen Shane Cotter (from Ballynoe) and Alan O'Sullivan (from Mallow), who have been the leaders in the under-25 jockeys title race, along with Dara McGill.
Racing will start at Inchydoney at 2 pm.
