My first night ever in West Cork was spent in the West Cork Hotel in Skibbereen where I had a splendid and comfortable room overlooking the other Grand Old Lady of "Sweet Skibbereen" the River Ilen. The West Cork Hotel has offered a very warm welcome for over 100 years & hopefully will do for many years to come and from that first stay it certainly left an impression as we roamed out to explore the special part of the world which is West Cork on the Wild Atlantic Way. Situated in the town centre, with all that Skibbereen & the surrounding area has to offer on its doorstep, the hotel is more than ideal for a complete break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. 34 spacious, uniquely decorated guestrooms satisfy a variety of accommodation requirements, with many offering river views. The Ilen Bar is a place of relaxation, with luxurious leather seating and a delicious bar menu for a swift, casual snack. For those with more time to enjoy a leisurely bite – the Restaurant offers a carvery lunch by day, and full a la carte menu by night, featuring many of the local food producers on our menus. I was particularly impressed on our second stay with my wife where I had booked an accessible room which was huge and had a second bed. To celebrate our anniversary we went back to where our West Cork adventure began, the lovely old lady which is the West Cork Hotel in Skibbereen by the River Ilen. I remember a warm welcome in what was originally the Railway Hotel in Skibb (the old railway bridge over the River Ilen is there to prove it!), a cosy fire in the welcoming bar presided over by Joan, comfortable rooms, and breakfast of whatever you wanted (I wanted Eggs Royale - Eggs Benedict but with smoked salmon from Union Hall) served until the civilised hour of 12. No buffet here "Far better to have something fresh served to you" Anne Marie told me firmly. The owner Tim Looney always greets you and the lovely Kate Arundel was both friendly and a mine of information on reception. Since we changed our life moving to West Cork we have been here many times, for events, with visitors, for business breakfasts, for Web Week, for traditional music and even the start of a currach race! We have always been greeted warmly, felt we are among friends and cannot recommend this home from home too highly. Please let's keep this a secret! (West Cork Hotel)[https://www.westcorkhotel.com/]
