Schull - Whats On In West Cork

Follow the Gull to Schull was an early tourist slogan which still captures the atmosphere of the lovely little town on Roaring Water Bay. Schull a small and a very attractive and lively village nestling between the foothills of Mount Gabriel and Schull Harbour. It is one of the most popular resorts of West Cork, especially to visiting yachtsmen. Schull village has a range of craft, book and local food shops, pubs and cafes for you to choose from, lots to keep you exploring and you will eat well in this corner of Ireland! It is a good place to search out your ceramic sculpture, pottery, batik wall hanging a range of Irish crafts. Or just to take time out and sit and enjoy the comings and goings in this lively harbour village. Be sure and visit the local Schull Country Market held generally March through to September, every Sunday, for some of West Corks great local foods and crafts. Schull is at its liveliest during Calves Week Named with a tongue in cheek reference to the famous yachting event Cowes Week, this is a not to be missed event for lovers of sailing and enjoyable even for those with only a passing interest in boats. The regatta here has been pretty much an annual event since 1884, the big attraction at the time being the fierce rivalry and epic battles between the local fleet of fishing yawls and the visitors from Baltimore, Sherkin, Cape Clear and Crookhaven. Top Tip: The Fastnet Film Festival in May is Schull's answer to Father Ted, a film festival based on the fact that Schull doesn't have a cinema. As they say in the movies it is now Big Box Office with an electric range of films shown in anything but a cinema and attracting top directors and stars beguiled by the madness of West Cork! Say hello to Saoirse for me!
