Description
The Irish Bréantrá ( Dirty Strand) is a name that could not be further from the truth when it comes to the charming village of Union Hall. The name derives from blood spilling in the village’s history.
Union Hall is a delightful and colourful hamlet where a key source of employment in the area is related to the fishing industry. The pier has its own ice plant and fish processing factory run by Glenmar Shellfish Limited, who also run the local wet fish shop. Restaurateurs, keen home cooks and locals flock to Union Hall Fish Shop for a comprehensive range of highest quality, fresh fish caught by the local fishing fleet.
The village is accessible from the Leap or Glandore side by the narrow Poulgom Bridge. The bridge is only one lane so vehicles must wait until the bridge is clear before crossing it. The bridge was built circa 1890 and featured in David Puttnam’s film “War Of The Buttons”.
In January 2012, the fishing vessel Tit Bonhomme foundered near Glandore Harbour. The locals spent several weeks searching for the remains of the Irish and Egyptian crew who were lost at sea. They were presented with a People Of The Year Award in September 2012.
When in Union Hall make sure to purchase some of Nolan’s Smoked Fish products which are prepared in the village. These products were part of the SuperValu Food Academy.
